On the western coast of the Istrian peninsula lies a little town that by its size is not so grand but by its cultural and historic heritage can stand side by side to some of the biggest world cities. Town history starts in the prehistoric period and in Roman times the settlement was known as Parentium. From the third century onwards Porec has been a diocese thanks to the bishop Mauro who died in one of the Christian exiles. After his death he was declared a saint and patron of the town so his day is celebrated in November. The town offers various forms of entertainment. You can take a stroll down the narrow streets of the old town, see some of the cultural landmarks, practice sports or simply enjoy the nature and its beauties. This town has been practicing tourism since the 70ies of the last century so we can state that it has gotten very good at it. During the season it is visited by numerous tourists from various countries, while off season it becomes a weekend destination for Croatian and neighbouring country visitors. To see all the magic on display you can take a light stroll, rent a bike or simply sit on one of the tourist trains that drive daily and frequently. One of the most important landmarks is the Euphrasian basilica (Eufrazijeva bazilika) from the 6th century that is on the UNESCO list of world heritage. Taking into account that this town exists from antiquity it is filled with such landmarks, especially the old part of the town where you can still see the street layout of the old Roman Decumanus and Cardo Maximus. As one of the more notable landmarks we can also add the Romanic house from the 13th century, House of the two saints from the 15th century and the Istrian assembly hall. The assembly hall was a Franciscan church in origin and it was built in the gothic era. Once the Istrian parliament resided here and today it’s where ceremonial sessions of the county assembly are being held as well as some other manifestations. Apart from the mentioned we recommend that you see the city walls, two towers – the northern one and the five-square one as well as the biggest roman shrine in Istria. While walking through the centre we recommend you to visit the aquarium where you can see numerous fish, crabs, shell fish and other sea life. If you are interested in other activities and not just sightseeing then you have a variety of choices: sailing (two sailing clubs are operational – JK Horizont and JK Porec), rentable boats, pedal boats, windsurfing, diving (Zeus faber or Diving centar Porec ), waterskiing (Skilift), bicycling (Istria-bike), hiking, hunting, karting (Motodrom Porec) and other. For adrenalin junkies you can choose between paintball (Paintball Croatia), the adrenalin park (Akros) or sport climbing. For lovers of good food and beverages we recommend you go to one of the best restaurants and taverns, and those are restaurants Arlen and Dvi murve, taverns Cakula and Monte Rosso. When you arrive to Porec you should visit one of the wine shops and taste some of the best wines this region has to offer; we recommend wine shops Arman, Epulon or Pinot. For the younger the most popular places are the Byblos discotheque, club Plava and Villa klub .
